Short Story Reading

In this page you will find the instructions for the activities with the short stories. This activity involves a) reading the story a first time on your own outside class; b) talking about the story in class with a classmate; c) posting a review in your e-portfolio. Each week, on Monday class we will work on this.

1. Choose one of the stories:

Death by Scrabble
Letter from an Understudy
The Man Who Married Himself
Zippo
One Summer's Night
Stanley Flemming's hallucination
Professor Panini
The Star
The cricket war
The Return
A Most Ambitious Experiment
They're made out of meat
The Winepress
The Monkey's Paw
The Archipelago

2. Before the class on Monday, read the story as many times as you need to understand it. Check the meaning of unfamiliar words. Then, fill out the story map.

3. In class, you will sit with a classmate who had read a story different from the one you read. Both will exchange information about the stories each read (the characters, the plot, the main events, opinions and views regarding the story).

4. You will sit with a classmate who read the same story you read. You both will exchange opinions and comments about the story.

5. After those class activities, you will post an entry in your e-portfolio, preferrably on a page entitled Reading journal, in which you will write a summary of the story in your own words, and a commentary (appreciation, opinion, evaluation) of the story read.

You will repeat this procedure every week starting on september 1st until November 21st.
